At the beginning of the year, learners (solo or in pairs) choose a project that they want to work on and get busy. The teacher and perhaps a university post-graduate science student provide some guidance on a regular basis. The learners will present their projects at a “zone EXPO” where they will get critical feedback on their work. They will do further work on it and then present it at the KHANYAGULA EXPO which is held in August each year in the O.R. Tambo hall in site C in Khayalitsha. Learners are judged and provided with further critical feedback. Significant incentives are provided for schools, educators and learners in the form of certificates, attractive prizes and money (for schools). The silver and gold certificate winners then have their names put forward for entry into the regional EXPO for Young Scientists that is held at UCT (usually in late August). Winners of gold medals at this EXPO get to participate at the National finals in (usually Pretoria (usually in early October). Top learners from this event may even get chosen to represent the country at international Science Fairs.
