Historically, the KHANYAGULA (KHAyelitsha, NYAnga, GUguletu and LAnga) EXPO programme was initiated in 1997 by a small group of Cape Town “township” school science teachers to encourage and support their learners to participate in the national EXPO for Young Scientists. It ran for two years before going into dormancy. In 2002 the Medical Research Council, through its community liaison officer, revived the project and continues to support it. Significant outside resource persons also assist. Over time the programme has also been extended to include schools from a wider range of disadvantaged areas in the greater Cape Town area. Over the years, the programme has been generously sponsored by the private sector and a Foundation (see details below).
